Bombing Incident Will Not Affect Myanmar Sea Games

KUALA LUMPUR. Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said the explosion at a leading hotel in Yangon, Myanmar, last week would not jeopardise the organisation of the SEA Games in December.

Kok Chi said the Malaysian contingent need not worry about safety because the host country would monitor the situation closely.

"There was a similar incident before the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, when there was an explosion but the athletes and officials, including from Malaysia, were safe," he told Bernama, here, Friday.

He said there have been a spate of bombings in Myanmar recently, including at the Traders Hotel on Oct 15, which injured a hotel guest from the United States.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said there has been no change in the government's decision to send a team to the SEA Games in Myanmar despite the bombing.

Khairy said the ministry would monitor the situation in Myanmar closely through Wisma Putra and the Malaysian Embassy in Myanmar.
