MALAYSIA UPDATED. Malaysia is targeting to win 40 gold medals out of the 213 on offer at the SEA Games in Myanmar from Dec 11 to 22.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Khairy Jamaluddin described the target as realistic based on the types of sports and events at the Games as well as the strength of national athletes who will be participating.
"The target of 40 gold medals is based on the assessment by the National Sports Council, Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) and sports associations," he told reporters after a working visit to Wisma OCM here today.
Earlier, he had also attended the Myanmar SEA Games managers meeting at the same venue.
Khairy said among the events which are target for gold included three from swimming, eight (diving), six (archery), five (athletics), three (pencak silat) and three (wushu) apart from defending the football gold medal.
There are 33 types of sports involving 460 events at the biennial games which would be held at Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay as well as Ngwe Saung Beach.
The national contingent comprises 833 athletes and officials. The athletes will be taking part in 29 types of sports except vovinam, traditional boat race, wrestling and kempo.
At the SEA Games in Indonesia two years ago, Malaysia collected 59 gold medals surpassing its target of 55 gold medals.
